Indian Athletes at Paris 2024 Olympics
A total of 117 Indian athletes, including five reserves, are competing for medals and sporting immortality at the Paris 2024 Olympics, which runs from July 26 to August 11.
Indian athletes are participating in 69 medal events across 16 sports: archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, equestrian, golf, hockey, judo, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, and tennis.
Notable athletes include Neeraj Chopra, who made history at Tokyo 2020 by winning gold in the men’s javelin throw, and is part of the 29-member Indian athletics contingent. He will aim to contribute to India’s medal tally in Paris 2024. Other returning Olympic medalists in the Indian contingent include badminton ace PV Sindhu, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, boxer Lovlina Borgohain, and select members of the Harmanpreet Singh-led Indian men’s hockey team.
Athletes like Avinash Sable, Antim Panghal, Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Vinesh Phogat, and Aman Sehrawat are also eager to add to India’s Olympic medal tally at Paris 2024.
Manu Bhaker won the first medal for India at the Paris 2024 Olympics, bagging a bronze and becoming the first Indian woman to win an Olympic shooting medal. She then made history by becoming the first Indian to win two medals at a single edition of the Olympics after clinching a mixed team 10m air pistol bronze with Sarabjot Singh.
Overall, India has won 38 medals at the Olympics to date. Norman Pritchard’s dual silver opened India’s account in Paris 1900. KD Jadhav, with a wrestling bronze at Helsinki 1952, was the first individual athlete from independent India to win an Olympic medal. Weightlifter Karnam Malleswari became the first woman to win an Olympic medal at Sydney 2000. Rifle shooter Abhinav Bindra was the first Indian to win an Olympic gold medal in an individual event at Beijing 2008, a feat not repeated until Neeraj’s javelin triumph at Tokyo 2020.
Men’s hockey, with 12 medals including eight golds, has been the biggest contributor to India’s Olympic medal tally, followed by wrestling with seven medals.
India returned with its best-ever haul of seven medals, including one gold, from Tokyo 2020 and will look to better the count at Paris 2024. So far, India has won three medals, all bronze, at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
